Three DIY Christmas Garlands

Handmade garland made of dehydrated lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, hemlock sprigs and fake red berries strung onto brown twine and strung across a window.

One of my favorite ways to decorate for Christmas is by making handmade decorations. Some of the easiest, versatile and budget friendly decorations are handmade garlands. These three DIY Christmas garlands easy to modify according to your own Christmas decor style and taste.

DIY Christmas Garland #1

The first garland is made from mainly natural materials. This garland is made from dehydrated orange slices, little bits of hemlock and cinnamon sticks.

Placing orange slices on a dehydrator tray for dehydrating.

I used my little dehydrator to dry the orange slices. You can also use your oven if you don’t have a dehydrator. I set my dehydrator to 135 degrees. The drying time will vary depending on the thickness of the slices and humidity. You just have to keep checking on them until they are nice and dry.

Every year we go up into the mountains to find our Christmas tree. This year I also grabbed some hemlock branches.

I decided to add the fake red berries at the last minute because I felt like they needed a pop of red. I found some fake berries at the dollar store last year. They were in my Christmas decorations just waiting to be used.

DIY Christmas Garland #2

Using a yarn needle to string fresh cranberries onto yarn for a simple Christmas garland.

This next garland is so simple but also a classic. It’s simply stringing fresh cranberries onto yarn or twine. You can string these on your tree or across a window.

Spraying a garland of fresh cranberries with a sealer.

Because the cranberries are fresh you will want to seal them. If you don’t seal them they will only last a few days. Sealing them helps them last a week or two longer. I used a Mod Podge clear acrylic sealer spray and it worked great. Make sure to do this part outside as there is a very strong smell. You will also need to put on 3-4 coats. I waited 20 minutes between coats.

I think these look perfect strung over my kitchen windowsill. I also cut a tiny little tree to put in my antique ironstone pitcher.

DIY Christmas Garland #3

This next garland is the humble paper chain. I think Christmas paper chains are absolutely charming and you can pick the paper color and patterns to go along with your personal Christmas decoration aesthetic. For this paper chain I chose a red strip and simple brown craft paper.

Another beautiful thing about paper chains is you can make the strips as wide or as long as you would like. I wanted this one to be “petite” so I cut the strips about 1/2 inch by 4 inches.

I think this chain goes perfectly on my antique books shelf and the size turned out perfectly.

I hope you maybe found some inspiration for making your own Christmas garlands! Merry Christmas, friends!
