This easy and delicious streusel, crumb topping, for baking is perfect for any recipe that calls for a crumb topping. It’s perfect on cakes, muffins, pies and pastries.
I love using this streusel, crumb topping recipe on top of coffee cake. Check out how I used it on my Pumpkin Cream Cheese Coffee Cake. A perfect recipe for a cozy fall day and your favorite cup of coffee or tea.
Ingredients for making a streusel, crumb topping:
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 6 tbls unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
How make a streusel, crumb topping:
- 1.) Put the flour, sugars, salt and cinnamon (if using) into a medium bowl.
- 2.) Melt the butter in a small saucepan on the stove or in 14 second increments in the microwave.
- 3.) Pour the melted butter into the dry mixture and start mixing together using a wooden spoon. After it starts to come together I move to using my hands to finish mixing. Rub in your hands until it comes together into a rough crumb with pieces about the size of peas. Bake according to the the directions for the recipe of the cake, muffin, pie or pastry recipe.
Notes:
- I find adding cinnamon to the streusel, crumb topping is perfect for spiced cakes and muffins. Such as my pumpkin cream cheese coffee cake recipe. But I like to leave it out for recipes that don’t have other spices like blueberry muffins. You can even omit the cinnamon add about 2 tsp lemon zest for recipes that use berries and other fruit to brighten the flavor.
- Make sure the butter isn’t too hot before adding. It can be a little warm but you don’t want it piping hot.
