Easter Nests

Easter Nests made with rice crispy treats and topped with a yellow Peep and mini chocolate eggs.

These sweet little Easter Nests are full of nostalgia for me. These were an Easter treat my Gramma made every year. One of the things that brings comfort to me when I am missing someone I love who has passed away is to make a recipe they liked to make. This is one of the ones that makes me feel close to my Gramma again even though she has been with Jesus now for 8 years.

These little treats are a nest made out of a rice cereal and marshmallows with your favorite Easter candy nested inside. So charming and whimsical they will bring a smile to everyone’s face no matter their age.

Ingredients you will need to make Easter Nests:

Here’s what you’ll need to make a batch of about 12–16 nests:

  • 3 tbls butter
  • 5 ½ cups mini marshmallows
  • 6 cups rice crispy cereal
  • Peeps (any color or shape you like!) Enough for 1 per nest.
  • Candy-coated mini chocolate eggs (like Cadbury)
  • Butter for your hands for shaping the nests to keep them from sticking

Directions:

  • 1.) Butter a couple standard size muffin tins and set aside.
Melting marshmallows and butter together.
Melted butter and marshmallows in a pot of the stove.
  • 2.) In a medium pot, on low heat, melt the butter. Once the butter is melted add the mini marshmallows.
  • 3.) Over medium low heat, stir the marshmallows and melted butter constantly while the marshmallows are melting. Don’t turn the heat too high, you don’t want to cook the marshmallows. You are just melting them.

  • 4.) Once the marshmallows are melted and smooth add the rice cereal. Stir until combined. It will be VERY sticky.

  • 5.) With buttered hands or two wooden spoons scoop some of the rice cereal marshmallow mixture into each muffin tin. Make sure to work fairly quickly while the marshmallow mixture is still warm and pliable. Press and shape the mixture into a nest shape.
  • 6.) Once the nests are cool you can add the Peeps and chocolate eggs. Store in an airtight container. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • You don’t have to use muffin tins if you don’t have them. You can still shape the nests with your hands just make sure your hands are buttered really well.
  • Make sure to only use enough heat to just melt the marshmallows and butter together. You don’t want to cook them.
  • Work relatively quickly. Once the rice cereal marshmallow mixture cools it will become too stiff to shape.
  • You can play around with what you place inside the nests. Use you favorite Easter candy. You can use any color Peeps or nix the Peeps all together. You can also use jelly beans for the eggs if you’d prefer. The great thing about having rice crispy treats for the nests is you can really use your imagination for what you put inside of them. Have fun with it!
